A relic from a simpler time.

Wow. A quick search suggests that has to be 40 years old.
I always hated it when the pull ring broke off.

Has it really been that long since they stopped using them? We used to take those with the little slots at the bottom of the ring, pull the ring off the tab, and then use the tab to flick the ring.

This is my source, but I think it was later in the 80s. I could swear the first beers I drank were pop tops, but that would have been more like 1983-86.

I think I can remember the first stay tab that I ever saw. I wonder, though, did anybody really ever choke on a pull tab that was dropped in the can? I mean, I saw it happen once on an episode of Emergency!, but that doesn’t mean it’s true.

When I was little, I remember my cousins making a curtain in their room out of strings of those tabs strung together.

I was just thinking of that exact episode after I spotted your picture! That dramatization was enough to scare me into never dropping the tab into a can.

Did you blow out your flip-flop?

As I recall, Gage and DeSoto were called to a house for a woman in distress, and her lazy ass, beer drinking husband just stood in the background swilling beer and talking shit about his wife. And then he started choking on the tab. Karma.

Fortunately, no.

I think it was the brother-in-law, IIRC, but yeah, he was an ass. They were there for something with the husband and the BIL kept mouthing off. I’m sure I’ve seen that episode in the last year as I still have my Plex server recording that show.
I did update my post with a link to an actual case of this happening. Interesting read.

Those used to be all over the damn place, the country was practically paved in them. Well, those, cigarette filters, and styrofoam McDonalds containers.

Remember these finger-slicers? They were only around briefly, sort of a transition between the pull-tabs & stay-tab cans.
They sucked.

I watched the hell out of that show back when it was originally o n. It showed up on some streaming service a few years ago, and I showed it to my son, who was probably about 8. He really liked it. It gave a pretty good idea of what paramedics do, what firefighters do, there’s cool fire engines and gear, but it isn’t so hyper-realistic and intense as the shows these days. It was much gentler, if death and mayhem can me made gentle. It was still in the vein of Adam-12 and Dragnet, two other shows I watched all the time. Oh, and I got Kent McCord’s autograph at a car show back in, like, 1975. Wish I still had it.

Wasn’t the real issue stepping on them? There was a song about that, after all.

Five cases in 50 years? Then while my mother was correct in telling me I might choke, the odds were really, really not that high.

I only remember them on Coors cans, but I wasn’t old enough to drink at that time. So I probably missed them on soda cans, but pulled many a pull tab in my youth.

I don’t know, but there’s a lot of stupid out there, so maybe?
Certainly a lot of cut fingers and feet. The latter from them being littered everywhere.

Hey, stop harshing on my nostalgia.

Yup - Adam-12 and Dragnet still get recorded whenever they show up, as well as the occasional episode of CHiPs, the latter corny AF, but with all of these shows I love seeing LA as it was 45-50 years ago. My favorites always involve LAX since I had worked there for 6 years and knew the place inside and out, right down to the long disused helicopter terminal in one of the parking structures and the fire training area hidden in the far SW corner of the field.

ha - pull tabs... I distinctly remember picking those out of the sand box at a local park as a child....

Maybe they were rolled out regionally - they were common in New England & New York in the late ‘70s. I was opening sodas for myself, but I opened plenty of beers for my grandfather. I don’t remember if he had a regular beer - I think it was probably whatever was on sale.

Ok, that’s kind of spooky. Guess what song came up on my 80's gigamix just as I started reading this?
Yup.
